"This is one of a series of photographs taken by Mr G. McWilliams of Salford. The date of the photograph is not known, but it may have been taken shortly after the Second World War. In this scene cargo from a cargo ship is being unloaded directly into waiting barges. These barges are special because they are made from concrete. Ferro Concrete Barges, or FCB 18 as they were known, were built during the Second World War. They were easier to construct as they did not require the carpentry skills used to build barges from wood. Also, concrete was cheaper to use than wood as a building material during the War."
