Not many people know that Jean Roddenbury got
her insperation for Star Trek's famous USS
Enterprise from a visit she made to England in the
1950's... There at Canvey Island
Point she found a strange ship made of Concrete
that actually floated! These fabulously strange craft were built
during WW2 when there was a shortage of materials
due to 'the Jerry' U-Boats sinking lesser non-Concrete vessels.
Jean sketched this craft and ever since, although modernised to suit
the whim of new trekkies, the Enterprise still holds her majestic
shape as seen all those years ago from Canvey Sea Wall.
Unfortunately fate, or rather the local Yacht club, has struck
a blow against all Star Trek & Concrete Barge loving fans -
On May 22nd 2003 (know as "522") she was bruitally
demolished - Gone forever! The only way now of seeing this WW2 Hero
is to visit www.ConcreteBarge.co.uk
