Recently www.ConcreteBarge.co.uk
ran a competition where visitors were invited to send in pictures
of how they see a future Canvey Island. Believe it or not, the Island
does have a history (Visit the Heritage Centre down Long Road to see
such relics as the headless horses skelton found in the lake and lumps
of concrete from some old oil barge from down the point). Most evidence
of her history has been destroyed in the name of Builders verses "Eyesore".
This picure sent in by local artist Terry Lellow, paints a
nightmare scenario where all the bungalows are replaced by red brick
4 bedroom houses that you can't get a shoe horn between with postage
stamp gardens and alsation dogs called Lady or Sheaba. As you can
see the promised new Thames crossing is in place after the
historical Oil Refineries were destroyed to make way for this short
cut to the garden of England.. Canvey's green belt with major store
en-suite.
Some Local History about Canvey-on-Sea
Canvey was originally bought off the Dutch natives called
'Vermoidens' by Jack 'King Hester' for a handfull of Argos jewelry
and nike sportsware .. the Lobstersmack public house was Dickens
insperation for 'Great Expectations' (My what Larks), as was every
other pub up the Thames between Foulness and London. The Labworth
Cafe was built and designed by Brunel who also built the Coathanger
bridge in Sydney Australia. The Paddocks Hall is called 'the
paddocks' because it once housed heards of long tail sheep.
The winning bidder will receive by email the picture as shown in
jpg format. All profits go to the upkeep of the site and whitewash
for the inverted cortina tyres I have in my front garden for
flowerpots.
