Description

The Concrete Barge, Former landmark on Canvey Point & World War 2 veteran, has been demolished(*1) by Canvey Yatch Club, apparently because it was "dangerous and an eyesore".

In the 80's this majestic craft was used for the infamous 'Concrete Barge Gig' by local group 'the PO'. It may have stunk of urine, been covered in graffitti, an eyesore, a danger etc but IT was OUR death trap (well it wasn't but you know what I mean).

Rumour has it the USAF used to use the craft as a local landmark so they could fly their Flying Fortresses safely accross Canvey Point.

The ghost of the Viking that has been seen walking the marshes could have also lived here, but then again some guy in Kismet Park told me this so Im not so sure it its true.

Remember the Canvey Sea monster(*2) that was washed up? Supposedly a hoofed figure. Well perhaps this creature was part of the ghostly crew that sailed the Barge over to Germany or something during the D Day invasions in Desert Nam.

Although I havn't bothered visiting the Barge for years, it wasn't in my backyard thus I wanted it to stay.. unlike the Canvey lighthouse at the Oyster fleet and the Art Deco Arcade and er countless other Canvey monuments that have been knocked down in the name of safety & progress. Its like that song, big red taxi when she sings "you don't know what you got till its been demiloshed".

Instead of a Jetty I propose we build a full scale concrete monument in the shape of a barge to be placed on the very spot our Beloved Barge once stood. The money I make could go towards this monument but yet again it could also buy me a meal in the Labworth Cafe where I can interest fellow diners with tales of the Sydney Opera House and how my mum knows Wilko Johnson's wifes mum.

The Photo shows my entire relic collection but not all are for sale.. The metal bits are MINE but one of the small rocks, erm I mean pieces of Barge is what you will get. The tear stains may have evaporated by time of sale.

As a special incentive for true born 'n' bred Canvey Islanders (even those who ratted away to Croydon/Ilford/London/Hockley but not Southend) I will offer a piece FREE to the 1st correct 4 people who answer the following question:

In the 80's the PO had the Concrete Barge gig including 'look at that sky'. What was the full name of the 'PO'?
